Charles Manson was an American criminal/cult leader. He led the infamous ‘Manson Family’ whose followers carried out several murders in 1969. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1971. Manson was born Charles Milles Maddox on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His biological mother was Kathleen Maddox. He received his last name from his stepfather William Manson. He never met his biological father. Manson grew up in the streets and committed numerous petty crimes as a child. His early rap sheet included petty larceny, burglary, auto theft, and armed robbery.
CAREER
Manson was in and out of correctional facilities and by age 32 he had already spent more than half his life behind bars. He relocated to San Francisco in the late 1960s. He attracted a large following and by 1968 he became their leader and mentor. His communal religious cult was dubbed ‘The Family’. Manson fed his followers with prophecies of an apocalyptic race war. Between 1968 and 1969, the Family carried out several notorious murders at his request. Their victims included actress/model Sharon Tate. She was murdered in her Los Angeles home on August 9, 1969 at the age of 26.
Manson was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in 1971. He was given the death penalty, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1972. He served his life sentence at California State Prison in Corcoran, California. He was denied parole on 12 occasions between 1978 and 2012. Manson’s crimes inspired the 1974 book ‘Helter Skelter’ by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry. The book was adopted into a 1976 TV film starring Steve Railsback. He was also the subject of the documentaries, Manson (1973) directed by Robert Hendrickson, Charles Manson Superstar (1989) directed by Nikolas Schreck, and Life After Manson (2014) directed by Olivia Klaus.
